More About Moles

Moles a can appear anywhere on the skin, alone or in groups. They are usually brown in colour and can be of various shapes and sizes. The brown colour is caused by melanocytes, special cells that produce the pigment melanin which colours skin, hair, and eyes, and which is heavily concentrated in most moles.

Melanoma is a malignant tumour that originates in melanocytes. Often originating in a mole, it is the most serious form of skin cancer. If diagnosed early and dealt with while it is still thin, it is almost 100% curable. Once malignant melanoma advances and metastasises (spreads) it is harder to treat and can be deadly.

Over the past 15 years the incidence of malignant melanoma has increased at an alarming rate, more than any other cancer. This is due to excessive exposure to sunshine. Malignant melanoma is one of the most common causes of death from cancer in young adults.

Monitor your moles

Malignant melanoma is one of the few cancers you can see before it is too late. You can reduce the chances of developing skin cancer:

If you have moles, regularly monitor them for change. If you, or a member of your family, are concerned about any mole or mark on your skin, see your doctor. Regular total skin examination helps identify new moles and changes in size, shape or colour of existing moles.
